Question: How long or short can a domain name be and what are the restrictions?

Answer: Most domain names have a minimum of 2 and a maximum 63 characters, including the extension (.com, .net, .org). A domain name may contain numbers (0-9), letters (a-z) or dashes (-).

A domain name may not:

* Begin or end with a dash (-).
* Contain special characters, such as(! @#$%&? ~: _)
* Have a dash (-) in the third and/or fourth positions.

Note: Many extensions allow non-ASCII characters to be used; for more information, please refer to our section on Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs).
