Smart work can be defined as the work that will be undergo in a corporate office where your work and you have the recognization.

but hardwork is like the work which we works but the recognization or the result may unknown.
that means may take an example of government offices where the recognization is given to the seniority itself only.

simple:- a smart worker sharps his axe for 10 mins by knowing it makes his job easy & chops the tree in 30 mins, a hard worker chops the same tree for an hour with more strength for double the time. similar is the difference between hard work & smart work Source: CoolInterview.com
