Make sure that all PCs are connected to backbone which is ur internetwork. U can do that with a hub. Connect all the interfaces of each machine to the hub and one port of hub should be connected to backbone. All the machines should be in the same network. Then ping to each other to verify the connection then Access the internet u don't need to worry abt the OS. even u can connect each machine with telnet or ssh connection. Source: CoolInterview.com

first, install linux os(redhat9 or EL5 or EL4) in one system. tat should act as a server. make sure the server has two ethernet cards(one for WAN other for Local pc connections). while installing redhat configure the eth0(ethernet card 1)for wan ip and eth1 for your local gateway. take a cat5 cable and connect your modem with eth0. With another cat5 cable connect eth1 and switch or hub so tat other pc's tat uses XP os can share the internet...not a very big task...cheers Source: CoolInterview.com
