Well You only need 2 partitions to install Linux one is the root partition / and other is the swap partition ,you can install linux without creating /boot ,it will automatically created under /

To install linux we have to make min 3 partition , i.e; Root ,Boot & Swap. Root contains the largest area in a hard disk as its capability, Boot can be minimum of 512 mb& swap size depends upon the size of ram attached in your computer , its mininum size will also be equal to size of RAM of max to its double size.

but it is recommended that swap and boot partition should also be made.

Even swap is not mandetory, its just to improve the overall performance.

According to linux and my knowledge we need 3 basic partitions to install linux.
1. root (/)
2. boot
3. swap
