South Africa's growing dependence on wind and solar energy, despite the country's impressive global reputation as a wind energy leader, also underscores the enormous challenges that the country faces as a low-carbon economy and a leader in reducing greenhouse gases. One recent report, however, sheds light on how South Africa is faring against environmental challenges even as it goes about its business as usual. (Mark Hertsgaard/Getty Images) South Africa's electricity supply has more than doubled between 2008 and 2012 from the late 1990s through to 2013, according to a report written by the Wind Energy Systems Research Alliance (WEER) and released last month in the journal Science Climate Change. The peak generation for those years was around 12 GW. The wind energy sector has grown in size and scope in South Africa while making little effort to invest in the transmission, distribution and storage infrastructure that would help meet the additional peak demand. "The rate of growth since 1998 is unprecedented," says John Taylor, the group's director of research, who believes the nation will peak at around 40 percent of its 2010 capacity by 2050. "At this pace, the wind energy sector has reached the threshold for 'peak carbon' in the global sense."
